Coming to Booth #802 at the 2025 Sawdust Art Festival, June 27-August 31, 2025! I marble these silk neckties in my Laguna Beach, California studio. It’s a 3-day process! How does the magic happen? Acrylic paint is applied by drops on a thickened cellulose-based solution. Custom-designed marbling rakes, combs, and other tools are used to manipulate the colors into unique patterns. You have to work quickly: you have 3-5 minutes before the paint starts to break up! My husband helps me lay the prepared necktie onto the paint, then I rinse it, dry for 24-48 hours, and heat-set to cure. I also introduced silk-screening, silk dyes (some incorporating the salt crystals technique) to my repertoire last year, and you’ll see some of that here.
